Myrrh has been used in embalming and religious ritual since ancient Egyptian times. Its name derives from the Arabic "murr" (bitter), and alongside frankincense, it was one of the most important resin trade goods of antiquity. 沒藥自古埃及時期便用於防腐與宗教儀式，其名稱源自阿拉伯文「murr」（苦），與乳香並列為古代最重要的樹脂貿易商品之一。
