Native to Indonesia's Maluku Islands, clove was extraordinarily valuable in medieval European spice trade. In the 17th century, the Dutch East India Company famously destroyed rival clove trees elsewhere to monopolize the trade. 丁香原生於印尼馬魯古群島，中世紀歐洲香料貿易中價值極高，17 世紀荷蘭東印度公司曾為壟斷丁香貿易而大規模砍伐競爭產地的樹木。
