絲柏的學名是-sempervirens。而希臘的塞普路斯島就是以它為命名的，就能想像絲柏它的重要性和顯著性了。
 
絲柏在神話和傳說中大多和死亡有關，不過sempervirens卻是有永生的意思，很有趣，死亡居然也是永生，這個絲柏的雙向作用很有相同的意境。
 
所以你會在南歐的墓園中看到許多的絲柏，它代表的一種永生不被改變的平靜形象，彷彿不曾有任何的事能改變絲柏的平靜。
 
著名的希臘神話說到了太陽神將一位年青人變成絲柏還有陰間之神的宮殿都是由絲柏樹所造的。大家印象深刻的耶蘇上十字架的木頭也是由絲柏樹所製作。而在古埃及時代棺木也是由絲柏所造，除了她是很好的木質品以外，絲柏俱有的一個最大的特色就是在抗菌及不易腐爛吧!
